Accused oppose Patkar plea for SIT probe

State BJP leaders accused in the case have opposed the petition of social activist
and leader of Narmada Bachaao Andolan (NBA), Medha Patkar, for further investigation
by SIT into the attack on her and others in 2002.
Patkar had filed a petition in the metropolitan magistrate’s court on June 18
seeking further investigation under section 173(8) of the Criminal Procedure Code
(Cr.PC) on the ground that the police had not collected crucial evidence in the case. A
copy of her petition was given to the counsel of accused and, on Saturday, they filed their
reply in court. Counsels for former mayor Amit Shah and former leader of the national
youth cell of the BJP, Amit Thaker, opposed Patkar’s plea on various grounds.
The matter was adjourned till July 16 as neither Patkar nor her counsel was
present in court. Apart from Shah and Thaker, Congress activist Rohit Patel and National
Council for Civil Liberties president VK Saxena are also accused in the case.
