Money,muscle power win in Gujarat election


Of the 182 MLAs,31 per cent have criminal records while 51 per cent are crorepatis

            With 51 per cent elected candidates having assets worth Rs 5 crore and more and31percentwithcriminal cases against them,candidates with money and muscle power have been successful in the 2012 state election,according to a report by Gujarat Election Watch.
            Of the 182 elected MLAs,57 have criminal cases against them.Twentyfour of these 57 MLAs face serious charges, said Jagdeep Chhokar,the convener of Mahiti Adhikar Pahel,an umbrella organisation of more than 70 NGOs in state and a member of Association of Democratic Reform.
            Janata Dal (United) candidate Chhotu Vasava,former minister of state for home Amit Shah and BJP general secretary Shankar Chaudhary,Shehra candidate Jetha Bharwad (Ahir) and Congress candidate from Talala Jashubhai Barad are the top five candidates with criminal cases having serious criminal cases like murder,kidnapping and theft against them.In fact,Jetha Bharwad has declared rape charges against him.
            We request the party to avoid making people with criminal cases pending against them ministers.The purpose of presenting this report before the state government to ensure that parties are aware of the criminal records of their candidates, Chhokar said.
