Judgment on Naroda Patia case today

Ahmedabad: A special court is likely to deliver its verdict in the Naroda Patia case, the biggest massacre of the post-Godhra riots, on Wednesday. The court had earlier kept the judgment for pronouncement on June 30, but was deferred till August 29.
    On February 28, 2002, 97 persons were killed in the industrial locality of Naroda. As many as 94 bodies were found, of which 84 were identified. Three people are still missing.
    The city crime branch nabbed 47 people and filed four charge sheets, but after the Supreme Court transferred the investigation to the special investigation team (SIT), 24 other accused were arrested including former minister Maya Kodnani.
    In all, eight chargesheets were filed in this case. The trial began in 2009 and lasted for more than two years. Kodnani and Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi were among those who were prosecuted. Two persons Tejas Pathak and Mohan Nepali jumped bail, whereas eight of the accused have died while the case was pending .
    While one person was discharged, one accused person Vinod Marathe is still absconding.
