Dipda Darwaza killings: Verdict set for July 30

The verdict in the Dipda Darwaza killings case, the second such case
reported from Mehsana district during the 2002 communal violence, is
expected to be pronounced on July 30, according to an official of the
Special Investigation Team (SIT) that probed nine of the post-Godhra
riot cases on Supreme Court orders.
Eleven persons were killed in Dipda Darwaza area of Visnagar town in
Mehsana district in the rioting that took place on March 1 2002. Among
the victims was a one-and-a-half-months old boy.
A total of 85 persons are accused in the case, including BJP MLA Prahlad Gosa.
The Gujarat Police, which first probed the case, had arrested 50
persons. After the SIT took over the probe in 2008, it arrested 33
persons, including former investigating officer in the case, police
inspector M K Patel.
In all, 127 witnesses have been examined in the case, eight of them
being eyewitnesses. Riots in Dipda Darwaza took place on the same day
when 33 Muslims were killed by rioters in the neighbouring Sardarpura
village.
Thirty-one accused were convicted in the Sardarpura massacre case.
