Ahmedabad: Chief minister Narendra Modi was getting real-time
information about the attack on Gulbarg Society during the 2002 riots
and “he had yet chosen not to do anything about it,” suspended IPS
officer Sanjiv Bhatt has told the National Commission for Minorities
(NCM).
In response to NCM’s proceedings initiated on March 12 on a
complaint by a riot victim from Ognaj village, Bhatt has filed an
affidavit describing at length how Modi remained willingly inactive
despite having all knowledge of the worsening situation on February
28, 2002.
Bhatt, who was deputy commissioner of intelligence during the
riots, has stated in his affidavit that he reiterated about the
increasing danger to the lives of former Congress MP, Ehsan Jafri, and
his family at Gulbarg Society during his second personal meeting with
Modi. “In response to my briefing, he asked me to find out details
about past instances wherein Jafri had opened fire on Hindu mobs
during earlier communal riots,” the affidavit reads.
It further says, “Upon coming out of the meeting with the CM, I
came to be informed by the control room that there were reports of
Jafri actually having opened fire on the riotous mobs a few minutes
ago. This made me realize that the CM had already been getting
real-time information about the situation that was developing at
Gulbarg Society and had yet chosen not to do anything about it.”
