25-yr-old dalit killed in Sanand

DNA Correspondent

On Tuesday, a dalit youth, Atul Rathod, 25, was allegedly murdered by a group of darbars in Rethal village, 22 km from Sanand of Ahmedabad district. According to police, the youngsters from the darbar community attacked four dalits with sticks and sharp weapons. All the four were admitted to Sahyog Hospital in Sarkhej, where doctors declared Atul dead. The others are critical.

The cause of the attack goes back to a minor scuffle between a dalit and a Darbar youth in December 2011 in Rethal village. Then, Yuvrajsinh Rajput, a Darbar of Rethal, was confronted by a dalit, Prakash Rathod. When Rathod was passing by a village road in his rickshaw, he saw Rajput sitting in his Scorpio car in the middle of the road. When Rathod asked Rajput to move, the latter beat him up. He also beat up Rathod's brother Gautam, who came to his rescue.

The brothers lodged an atrocity complaint against Rajput with Sanand police. They alleged that he took their rickshaw. While filing a panchnama for that case, Sanand police took signatures of two locals, Valji Rathod and Vashram Rathod, dalits of the village, as panchs. To avenge this act, Yuvrajsinh attacked Manu, son of Valji Rathod one week back. Manu was stopped by him and some of his friends while he was driving his rickshaw. According to Sanand police, he also beat up Manu's brother, who tried to rescue him.

On Tuesday, Yuvrajsinh and his men targeted the son of Vashram Rathod, deputy sarpanch of Rethal. According to Rajiv Ranjan Bhagat, DSP, Ahmedabad district, Rathod's son and his friends were severely beaten up, after which they were admitted to the hospital. “Police’s inaction is responsible for this murder,” said Valjibhai Rathod. Yuvrajsinh, his father Bharat Rajput and a relative, Balabhai Rajput, have been named accused in the case. They were earlier named in three other incidents of attack.
