Ishrat case: Fresh FIR likely today

DNA Correspondent l Ahmedabad

RR Verma, chairman of Gujarat high court-appointed special investigation team (SIT) probing the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, is likely to file a fresh FIR on Thursday. Sources said the FIR is likely to make some disclosures that will send shock waves through the state's government and bureaucracy.

The FIR is expected to contain a gist of the final report submitted by the Ishrat SIT in the high court last month. It is likely to name many police officers of the state as the accused, the sources said. The SIT is in the final stages of preparing the FIR which is likely to be filed in the CBI office in Delhi, the sources added.

However, the chairman of Ishrat SIT told DNA that work on the FIR was still going on. He, however, refused to say exactly when the FIR would be filed.

Other sources in the Ishrat SIT said that the probe team had until December 16, 2011, to file the FIR and that it will do so on time. The source also said that Verma was on leave for few days but had now resumed his duties.

The HC had directed the Ishrat SIT on December 1 to file a fresh FIR in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case. Mumbra-girl Ishrat Jahan and 3 others were killed by Ahmedabad crime branch in a fake encounter on the outskirts of Ahmedabad in June 2004.
