People's Union for Civil Liberties
2nd October 2011
PRESS RELEASE

· We, the PUCL condemn the Gujarat Government's vindictive action in arresting senior IPS officer
Mr. Sanjeev Bhatt.
· It is unfortunate reality that people are worried about the person's life when they are under police custody.

We, the activist of People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) condemns the Gujarat Government's vindictive action in arresting senior IPS officer Mr. Sanjeev Bhatt. This is nothing but the frustration and desperate action of the Government of Gujarat. This is an open action, not just attempt, on the part of Government of Gujarat to intimidate all other important witnesses of Gujarat Carnage 2002.

It is also equally shocking that Mr. Sanjeev Bhatt was arrested under sections 183,189, 193, 195 and 341 of the IPC.

The action of Government of Gujarat is nothing but subversion of the Constitution of India and the Rule of Law.

Ms. Shweta Bhatt wife of Mr. Sanjeev Bhatt in her letter dated 30th September 2011 address to The Police Commissioner of Ahmedabad, The Director General of Police, Gandhinagar and The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Ahmedabad clearly stated that she is worried about the life of Mr. Sanjeev. It is unfortunate reality that people are worried about the person's life when they are under police custody. It is unfortunate that this letter is completely kept aside by the concerned police authorities under undue pressure. This is shocking and it clearly indicates that the police is acting under the clear-cut direction of the Home Minister Mr. Narendra Modi.

We appeal the citizens of Gujarat and progressive organizations to condemn the vindictive action of the Government of Gujarat.
