Gujarat EDN DNA 30JUL2011 DNA Correspondent Ahmedabad

Social activists working for justice to the victims of Gujarat riots have set up a Committee for Defence of Teesta Setalvad. A note circulated by members of the committee states that the committee will be headed by retired Supreme Court judge PB Sawant.
Former chief minister of Gujarat Suresh Mehta and Prof Asghar Ali Engineer will be its vice-chairpersons. Former additional solicitor general of India BA Desai will be the convener while Irfan Engineer of All India Secular Forum would be the joint convener of the committee. Apart from the office-bearers, around 700 eminent persons from all over India are members of the committee.

The note further says that the committee will take appropriate action to ensure that neither Setalvad nor anybody else is victimised for working for the cause of justice. The committee will defend the human rights of the vulnerable sections and will not only monitor cases slapped on Setalvad but also stand in solidarity with all those who are fighting for the cause of justice in Gujarat, the note says.
